NATURISM FAQs

Whether you’re just curious or considering your first visit to a naturist venue, this guide is for you. Here we answer the most common questions about naturism, nudism, and what to expect at a welcoming club like Brocken Hurst, home of The Naturist Foundation.

What is the meaning of Naturism?

Naturism meaning is the practice of non-sexual social nudity when circumstances – and weather – permit. For those new to naturism, you’ll soon find that everyone respects you for who you are and will treat you with dignity whatever shape or size. Naturists are keen to know the person and often don’t notice if you’re wearing clothes or not! In return we ask you to respect us and our common passion.

What is a Naturist?

A naturist is someone who chooses to spend time naked in social or natural settings, often as part of a body-positive, non-sexual lifestyle that promotes freedom, comfort, and connection with nature. Naturism — also known as social nudity or the naturist lifestyle — is based on values like self-acceptance, respect for others, and a shared belief in the benefits of non-sexual nudity.

Naturists may enjoy activities such as nude swimming, sunbathing, hiking, camping, and attending naturist resorts or clubs, where nudity is the norm. Many naturists find it improves their mental well-being, reduces body shame, and fosters a sense of community.

While often confused with nudism, naturism usually emphasizes the philosophy and ethics behind the practice — not just being naked, but embracing a healthy, natural approach to life.

Are there rules about clothing at Brocken Hurst?

You are free to wander wherever you wish without clothing. Please make sure you have a towel to sit on. Some evening naturist events may request that you’re dressed, during meal service or when dancing. As you leave, you’ll see the sign asking you to be clothed by the main gate. Of course, when it’s cold we put on clothes to keep us warm. Nothing odd about that!

My partner isn’t a naturist; can they still come with me?

Yes, as long as they are comfortable and respectful. The Naturist Foundation promotes naturism as a natural and healthy pursuit. Whilst our aim is to make all visitors comfortable as naturists within the confines of Brocken Hurst, we do understand some may take a little longer to feel at ease without clothes. We have members of all ages, genders and abilities and you’ll find someone always willing to chat over any particular concerns.

Do you allow body piercings/jewellery?

Piercings and jewellery are fine as long as they have no sexual connotations, especially as we are a family orientated club.

What’s the difference between nudism and naturist meaning?

In the UK, the terms are often used interchangeably. However, naturism tends to focus more on the philosophy of body positivity, freedom, and community, while nudism can refer more simply to the practice of being nude. At Brocken Hurst, we proudly follow the naturist ethos.

What kind of people are naturists?

Naturists come from all walks of life — teachers, builders, retirees, artists, parents, professionals. There’s no “type.” People of all ages, shapes, and backgrounds find naturism to be freeing, equalising, and good for mental and physical well-being.

Is naturism just about being naked?

No — naturism is not just about nudity. It’s about body confidence, freedom, equality, community, and living more naturally. The nudity is a part of it, but the deeper value is about respecting yourself and others without the barriers of clothing, status, or judgement.

What happens at a naturist club?

Naturist clubs like Brocken Hurst offer many of the same things as any other country club or wellness retreat: swimming, saunas, walking trails, fitness, social events, naked camping, sunbathing, and quiet relaxation. The main difference? Clothing is optional — and often unnecessary.

Do I have to be naked as soon as I arrive?

No. Especially for first-timers, it’s totally okay to take your time and go at your own pace. Most people find they quickly feel comfortable, but we believe in consent and comfort above all. Our environment is friendly, non-judgemental, and welcoming to newcomers.

Is naturism sexual?

Absolutely not. Naturism meaning is a non-sexual practice, and any inappropriate behaviour is not tolerated. Our grounds are family-friendly, and everyone agrees to a shared code of respectful conduct. It’s about body positivity, not sexuality.

Are sexual activities allowed at Brocken Hurst?

No. If you’re looking to ‘swing’ good luck to you but you’ve arrived at the wrong web site! Please shut the door on your way out.

Is naturism legal in the UK?

Yes, naturism is legal in the UK. It’s not against the law to be naked in public, as long as the intent isn’t to cause alarm, distress, or harassment. There are also many designated naturist beaches, clubs, and events across the country.

Is naturism sinful or immoral?

While some may have cultural or religious beliefs about nudity, naturism itself is not sinful or shameful. It’s not illegal. It’s about embracing your natural body in a respectful, communal setting. For many, it’s a way of healing body image issues and overcoming social pressures. In fact, located at Brocken Hurst is the Christian Naturist Fellowship – A UK based organisation to support, inform and encourage Christian Naturists.

What’s the average age of naturists?

Naturists come in all ages. At Brocken Hurst, we welcome young adults, families, and seniors alike. While some naturist clubs historically skew older, around 55 and older, many younger people are discovering naturism today as a way to live more authentically and reduce social pressure.

Is naturism safe for women?

Yes. Women are a valued and respected part of the naturist community. Many women find naturism empowering, freeing them from unrealistic body standards. Our environment prioritises safety, respect, and mutual consent at all times.

What should I bring to a naturist club?

We recommend bringing:

  • A towel to sit on (a naturist must!)

  • Sun cream if outdoors

  • A robe or wrap (if it makes you more comfortable at first)

  • Flip-flops or sandals
